KOSMO: A Knowledge Graph of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection
KOSMO is a new interactive tool to learn more about the artworks in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Collection and explore the connections between the artists who created them and the exhibitions they were featured in throughout the history of the Museum.
Goals
- To make it easier to discover the artists in the Museum Collection.
- To offer new points of view, fresh connections, transversal readings, and multidisciplinary approaches to the works and artists in the Museum Collection.
- To group curatorial and educational content related to the Museum Collection in a single interface.
- Having a Linked Open Data (LOD) model for the information contained in the knowledge graph that complies with the Semantic Web rules and is in line with the Linked Art initiative.
How Does It Work?
In this Knowledge Graph, the nodes represent the artists in the artistic holdings of the Museum.
When you select an artist, two second-level nodes are displayed; the first, with said artist’s artworks in the Guggenheim Bilbao Collection; the second, with the Museum exhibitions featuring these works.
Upon double-clicking on an artist’s node, a file is shown with additional information about the artist, such as their biography and their works in the Collection.
Using the Graph’s Filters, you can group artists according to different criteria, including:
- Artistic movements and/or trends
- Mediums used
- Decades of birth
The connections between artists can be of different types:
Significant connections: Connections between artists in the Collection. They can be personal connections, artistic associations, or links with a significant impact on the careers of the artists connected.
Exhibitions: Artists included in the same exhibition. Here, the Museum’s curatorial criteria are also used as connectors. These relations are shown in the Graph by linking the exhibitions when you click on two or more artists.
Chronology: Artists related because they lived in the same period. This is shown when you adjust the timeline in the Filters section.
